Creating opportunities. Transforming lives.

December 14, 2011 by

So, I never would have imagined the transformation [at Sportable] that has taken place over the past several months!

Back in June/July, a little birdie posed a question…what does Sportable mean?  Hmmm… I just assumed everyone know the answer to that and then quickly realized that not everyone is privy to the “madness”in my head.  But, isn’t it obvious- I thought… SPORT  and ABLE.  We actually began our early days as SportAble– highlighting the sport and one’s inherent ability however, no one ever pronounced it correctly so–Sportable it was!!

The name has served us well over the past 6 years but this question brought to light a much bigger issue– when you speak about Sportable, is there a visual that folks automatically think of [like Special Olympics]–the answer is NO, the general public does not think of a wheelchair basketball player or amputee triathlete when they here Sportable. As we try to engage the community in our mission and attract new athletes, it seemed as though this was a great place to start.

We brought this issue to our friends at Pure Culture and Medipond who had been instrumental in our growth in 2010 as a result of the video that they pulled together introducing folks to our programs.

Bob Kelley [I am certain] is considered a genius in his field, as Founder and President of Pure Culture.  His approach allows for a natural progression in the re-branding process. We began our work one summer day in a large conference room at their office throwing words onto a white, blank powerpoint slide that was shining on the wall–very intimidating.  With my historical and therapeutic perspective, Deb Lockhart’s [our Development Director] curiousity, and Bob’s thoughtful guidance we arrived at our new brand.

On Thursday, this was all brought to life– including a new logo design ( and secret new website) in front of Sportable’s Board of Directors. This brand is something that I am extremely proud to be part of–it makes me excited to go to work every day and work to “Create opportunities and Transform lives” [through sport]–it will serve as a framework for our Strategic Plan  and present a unique opportunity to build on our Team approach in working with our athletes, volunteers, and community partners.  The logo itself allows us to broaden our outreach and not be misunderstood as being an organization working only with wheelchair athletes. It takes into account the need to emphasize the ABILITIES of our athletes. For those of you that read the blogs…you get a sneak peak…all others will have to wait for the official release at our Inaugural Registration Expo Jan 13th and 14th ( where all athletes will pickup their packet of gear, as well as complete annual paperwork)–details coming soon!

A special thanks to my Emerging Nonprofit Leader Classmate, Deborah Lockhart, who has served as Sportable Development Director since June 2011. Her eagerness, dedication, curiousity, and most importantly her out of the box thinking opened up the door to so many great things for Sportable– I am personally grateful to her and very sad to see her go [though I hope she won't be to far away-- as I think she caught a bit of the "adaptive sports" bug]–love you Deb!

Giving Thanks…

November 25, 2011 by

As I sit a by the fire ( for ambiance definitely not needed for warmth–boy, was it a beautiful day), I realize that  we at Sportable have much to give thanks for this year. I can remember that this time last year–the future of the organization was a bit more uncertain–as we struggled to gain local support of our 12 sport programs.

Just a year later–we are able to boast strong relationships with our community partners that have not only helped to provide adaptive sports programs to our athletes but who have supported us in taking many programs to the next level in 2012–increasing their in-kind support or providing additional funding.

We are grateful for the efforts and expertise of our staff members whose shared passion keep things running smoothly day after day.

We appreciate greatly the numerous hours that our volunteers commit to aid our staff and coaches in providing the best quality programs to our athletes–whether it be our youth volunteers who serve as ball kids at tennis practice or those that donate their weekends and/or evenings to lug kayak equipment…maybe even drive our van overloaded with sports chairs—-we could not do it without you!!!

A special thanks to our coaches–you are each instrumental in empowering our athletes to see beyond their disabilities–focusing on each individuals ABILITIES versus their limitations!!

We have been so fortunate to gain the local communities support going into 2012–whether it be foundations, private donations, in kind consultations…you have all been instrumental in bring our brand to life and breaking down barriers for individuals with physical disabilities who deserve an opportunity to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

And last but certainly not least, I personally am thankful for those members of our Board of Directors that have believed in Sportable from its inception and who have bought into the vision and most importantly bring our mission to life in the Greater Richmond Community.

THANK YOU to the Sportable Team–each member plays an essential role in moving us forward into 2012.  In closing, I share with you a favorite quote to live by today–and everyday!!

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

“Dreams START. Guts FINISH.” ( Nike Ad)

It seems to me that this quote or tagline that NIKE branded is so true for many who find that sports–whether cycling, running, swimming, lacrosse, etc.– are some what of a necessary evil in life.
We all start out with some sort of goal in mind–whether it be to beat a fearless opponent, get a PR, meet new friends, win a medal or trophy–even just for the cool uniform. Whatever it may be…that is what gets you out the door, to the start line or on the court–but, it’s certainly not what wins the game or provides that second ( or 10th:) wind to get you across the finish line.
This is the point that I am reminded of a quote from Vince Lombardi…”Sports don’t build character, they reveal it!”. Something so unique happens within you-that the physical act becomes a very mental journey…one where you have to dig deep and fight your own personal doubts of why you CAN’T do it, SHOULDN’T do it, etc. These are all just obstacles to overcome–sometimes much bigger and stronger than the 250 lb Linebacker you may be up against!
For each and every “athlete”..(and I mean this in the most casual sense of the term, since I am including myself in this group)…it is just one foot in front of the other or one push at a time. The key is to be patient, listen to your body–quiet your mind and BELIEVE in yourself because there is a TEAM of people who believe in you that you didn’t even realize were paying attention.

No this technique will get you to about mile 24-25 of a marathon ( hopefully) or maybe even overtime in a soccer game ( penalty kicks) but the real challenge is to cross that finish line or score that game winning goal– this is GUTS!! We all have them, we just need to dig deep and tap into them–extraordinary things can happen.

I say this as I recover from running 26.2 miles this weekend..anyone that has knows that there are so many opportunities to give in–you really have to want it badly enough to cross that finish line. I am humbled every day by the Sportable athletes–some who are highlighted here for their achievements in marathons in NY and DC over the past few weeks and Deb Lockhart, our Development Director-new to the sport of running-who took on Richmond’s Half Marathon this past weekend. For each, there was a reason to sign up.. a hidden story that motivates them. For our athletes, they did not allow their physical limitations get in the way of their dreams.

So, if you doubt yourself or think you can’t do something…I challenge you to think again. Set a goal– EMBRACE IT– I can assure you that the journey will be worth it in the end.

Sportable and The Amazing Raise- 6a Oct

Sportable and The Amazing Raise- 6a Oct 5th- 6p Oct 6th

What is The Amazing Raise?

The Amazing Raise 2011 is a unique, and yes, amazing, online giving event that provides the opportunity for the Greater Richmond region to come together and raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits (more than 350) in 36 hours – starting at 6 am on October 5 through 6 pm on October 6.

Thanks to the Community Foundation’s support, there have been numerous “contests” created throughout the 36 hours, offering every nonprofit (large or small) an opportunity to “win” additional funds……but first, here is what we need to do:

Beginning at 6am Wednesday, donations can be given through http://www.Sportable.org or http://www.GiveRichmond.org and paid by credit card. Only credit card payments through either link will count toward winning.

To give everyone a chance to get the word around, let’s focus on “Prime Time”, Wednesday, October 5 from 8-10pm. The nonprofit with the most $25 donations, wins an additional $1000!

This is a “raise” we can all get behind. So come home from work, after dinner, homework, and bedtime stories…..make a quick donation of $25** (between 8-10pm) then sit back, put your feet up and grab your book or remote. Great way to finish the hump day!

Please forward this information to those on your email list or address book. Also post your own call to action on your own Facebook, office email bulletin, or any other creative communiqué. The Amazing Raise can help Sportable and is an inexpensive way to show your support.

Spread the word—-it will be Amazing and it starts tomorrow through 6pm Thursday.

Thank you!
The Staff at Sportable

**Only your first donation for $25 counts toward the prize, so getting as many as we can to contribute will increase the number of donations and keeps it affordable for us all!
